The Global Honeybee Disappearance

The Role of Honeybees (Apis mellifera) in Understanding the Toxicity of Sub-lethal Pesticide Exposure in Humans

By: Professor Chensheng (Alex) Lu, PhD,

Associate Professor of Environmental Exposure Biology, Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health

The disappearance of massive numbers of honeybees worldwide has raised the concern of losing the important pollinators and its implication to the food supplies. In this presentation, Professor Lu will discuss the onset of honeybee losses in 2006, the scientific evidence of its link to a popular group of insecticides, the global public policy implementation to address this ecological crisis, and its link to human health.

Professor Lu is an Ad hoc panel member, US EPA Federal Insecticide, Fungicide, and Rodenticide Act (FIFRA)Scientific Advisory Panel (2004 – present), Associate editor, Journal of Exposure Science and Environmental Epidemiology (2006-present), Associate editor, Environmental Health Perspectives (2008-present).

Professor Lu is collaborating extensively with scientists/researchers in the following research projects; 1) children’s residential pesticide exposures with Boston Housing Authority and the Committee for Boston Public Housing, 2) dietary pesticide exposures with Food and Drug Administration (FDA) regional labs, 3) biomarkers of pesticide exposure and health effects with Agricultural Health Study, 4) honeybee colonies collapsing disorder (CCD) with Harvard Center for the Environment, 5) community-based farmworker housing, exposures and health with Wake Forest University School of Medicine, and 6) exposure characterization of endocrine disrupting chemicals among custodians using conventional and green cleaning products with University of Connecticut/School of Medicine.

The Dinner will be held at the Middlesex School in Concord on Thursday, June 15th. Beverages and appetizers will be offered at 6:30 pm, followed by a delicious buffet at 7:15 pm. Dinner is $55/per person. Students $25.
